Clear aligners — often called “invisible braces” — are a series of thin, transparent trays that gently move your teeth into place. Because they’re nearly invisible and removable, they’ve become a popular choice for adults and teenagers who want straighter teeth without metal brackets.
How clear aligners work

After a detailed assessment, your dentist plans how each tooth should move. A series of custom aligners is made from that plan. Each set moves your teeth a tiny amount, and you switch to the next set every one to two weeks.
Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments are sometimes placed on certain teeth to help the aligners grip and guide movement. They’re removed when treatment ends.
Who are clear aligners suitable for?
- Mild to moderate crowding or spacing
- Some bite problems (overbite, underbite, crossbite)
- Teeth that have shifted after earlier braces
- Adults and responsible teenagers who will wear them as prescribed
Complex cases may still be better treated with fixed braces — your dentist will advise after examining you.
Clear aligners vs braces
| Clear aligners | Fixed braces | |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Nearly invisible | Visible brackets (tooth-coloured options available) |
| Removable | Yes — for eating and cleaning | No |
| Food restrictions | None while aligners are out | Avoid hard and sticky foods |
| Depends on you | Must be worn 20–22 hours a day | Works continuously |
| Suits complex cases | Some | Most |

What treatment is like
- Wear time: 20–22 hours a day — take them out only to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean your teeth.
- Comfort: you may feel pressure for a day or two with each new set; it usually settles quickly.
- Check-ups: typically every 6–8 weeks to make sure everything is on track.
- Duration: often between 6 and 18 months, depending on how much movement is needed.
Looking after your aligners
- Brush your teeth before putting aligners back in.
- Rinse and gently clean aligners daily with lukewarm (not hot) water.
- Always keep them in their case when they’re out.
After treatment: retainers
Teeth naturally try to move back. Wearing a retainer as advised keeps your new smile in place.
